Window film: what to tell your cleaner

Tell the cleaner about applied window film so the actual surface and manufacturer instructions can be considered before work begins.

A window with a turned film corner points to product name, applied surface and care-instruction notes.

Film changes the surface information

If a window has an applied privacy, solar or safety film, include that detail in a cleaning request. The cleaner needs to know what surface they may be working on, not just that there is glass in the opening. A film can be difficult to identify from an ordinary room photograph, and its presence should not depend on someone noticing a subtle edge during the appointment.

Use the product name and installer information you already have. If the brand or type is unknown, say that plainly. “Film applied to the room-side glass; product unknown” is useful information. You do not need to peel a corner, test a product or inspect an inaccessible edge to prove what is installed. The right next question may be for the installer rather than an experiment on the window.

Pass on the actual care guidance

3M's window-film care bulletin warns against abrasive cleaning materials and scraping tools, and gives product-specific instructions. The relevant point is that film has its own care requirements. Do not assume advice for one manufacturer's product, an automotive tint or an uncoated pane applies to every film in a house.

If the film has just been installed, ask the installer when normal cleaning can begin and provide that information to the cleaner. Avoid taking a general waiting period from an unrelated product and treating it as universal. Keep the installer guidance alongside any warranty paperwork so later appointments do not lose an important restriction after the initial fitting is forgotten.

Identify the affected face and extent

A useful description says which windows have film and which face carries it, where known. Some households may have film on only one room or part of a pane. Others may have patterned areas or separate strips. Describe those boundaries without assuming every window at the address is treated identically. If you want the opposite face cleaned as well, make that a separate part of the scope.

Information Example wording
Location Front bedroom, two lower panes.
Surface Film is applied on the room side.
Product Installer paperwork is available, or product identity is unknown.
Condition A visible lifted edge or existing mark needs to be noted.
Requested work Internal surface cleaning, external glass, or both.

These are hypothetical examples of information, not an assessment of what can be cleaned. A clear scope still needs to be agreed for the actual product and condition.

Keep film defects separate from ordinary marks

If an edge is lifting, a bubble is visible or there is an existing tear, describe it before the visit. Cleaning should not be expected to repair the film or reattach it to the glass. Do not ask for a mark to be scraped away without establishing whether it belongs to the glass, film or an adhesive layer. The installer can advise on a suspected product or fitting issue.

Likewise, removing the film is a different task from cleaning its surface. State explicitly if removal is what you have in mind and ask the appropriate specialist about it. A standard internal-window booking should not carry an implied instruction to strip a treatment, remove decorative material or restore the original unfilmed appearance.

Book the routine work with the exception clearly stated

For room-side windows, start with the internal cleaning service. Mention the film in the enquiry or relevant booking information so it can be considered. If both sides are requested, the inside and outside service information helps distinguish the surfaces. The regular external four-clean commitment does not automatically apply to this separate internal request.

You do not need to provide a complete glazing specification for every ordinary window in the property. Identify the affected panes, share the known product guidance and explain any visible condition concern. That short, targeted information is what allows the cleaning discussion to reflect the surface you actually have.
