Advice from Monk Cleaning Services

Is it a scratch or a surface mark?

When a mark persists, describe its location and history before assuming stronger cleaning will resolve it.

A line on a window is shown enlarged through a magnifying glass, emphasising observation before a treatment decision.

Do not let a label choose the treatment

A line on a pane may be described casually as a scratch, streak or stain before anyone has established what it is. Those labels imply different work. If you are unsure, use a neutral description such as “a narrow line across the lower pane” and explain when you noticed it. This preserves the important information without asking a cleaner to promise a repair based on an unconfirmed diagnosis.

Ordinary surface cleaning and specialist glass repair are different services. The Glass and Glazing Federation's guidance on surface damage discusses assessment by a glass repair specialist. It does not mean every mark can be repaired or that a routine window clean includes that work. Material, condition and the nature of the damage need appropriate consideration.

Make a factual record before another attempt

Identify the pane, the face if known and the position of the mark. Note whether it was present before a recent installation, decorating project or cleaning visit, but only if you actually know. If the history is uncertain, say so. Avoid assigning responsibility from timing alone. A clear chronology is useful; an unsupported allegation can distract from establishing what the mark is.

Keep any existing photographs that show the area. New photographs should be taken from a normal safe position and include enough frame detail to identify the location. An image can support a conversation, but it should not be presented as a conclusive assessment of depth, coating condition or repairability. Ask the relevant specialist what information would help.

Stop treating persistence as a reason for more force

If a mark remains after ordinary cleaning, that does not automatically justify scraping, polishing or a stronger chemical. Mention anything already applied, including household products or tools. This helps the next person understand the surface history. Do not repeat a treatment merely to demonstrate that it failed, and do not conceal previous attempts because you think they make the enquiry harder.

Known films and coatings are especially relevant. Pass on the product name or installer guidance where available. If the surface is unknown, retain that uncertainty. A repair question should reflect the actual glazing rather than the assumption that all panes are plain uncoated glass.

What you know Useful next wording
A line is visible but its nature is uncertain Describe the line and ask what assessment is appropriate.
The pane has a known applied film Identify the film and contact its installer about damage concerns.
A specialist has confirmed damage Keep their assessment separate from the routine cleaning request.
Ordinary dirt also needs cleaning Agree that surface work without expecting it to repair the mark.

Use a hypothetical example to separate the tasks

Imagine a homeowner with fingerprints on the inside glass and a persistent line of uncertain origin. They can book or enquire about internal cleaning while flagging the line as an existing concern. The agreement should not imply that removing the fingerprints will remove the line, nor that the cleaner is being asked to polish the glass. If the line needs assessment, that becomes a separate next step.

For the routine work, internal window cleaning or one-off window cleaning may be relevant, depending on the face and requested service. Use the appropriate route and state the exception clearly. Do not choose an unrelated package solely because its name sounds more intensive.

Keep expectations attached to the agreed work

Ask what result the proposed service is intended to address and what remains outside it. If a repair professional later identifies the mark, preserve that information for future cleaning appointments. There is no need to re-litigate an established condition at every visit, but it should remain available where it affects handling or expectations.

The useful outcome is a clear distinction between ordinary dirt, an unresolved observation and confirmed damage. That distinction lets you request cleaning confidently without turning a routine appointment into an implied promise to restore every visible feature of the glazing.
