Exterior cleaning around climbing plants and trellis
A practical plan for keeping plants, supports and the cleaning route clearly separated in an exterior-work enquiry.

Treat the planting as part of the setting
Climbing plants, trained stems and trellis can make an exterior-cleaning request more specific than simply identifying a dirty surface. They may cover part of a window, sit close to a fascia or occupy the usual approach. Start by explaining the arrangement as it is. Do not assume the cleaner will move supports, untie stems or cut vegetation as part of the cleaning visit.
The first question is which surface you want addressed. It might be a visible frame behind a trellis, a fascia above planting or ordinary glass beside a climbing support. Name that surface and describe how the planting relates to it. A useful enquiry does not need to identify the plant species unless there is a specific reason the person responsible for the garden needs that information.
Separate plant management from cleaning
Decide who will manage any gardening work that is needed, if any. This may be you or someone you have separately appointed. Ask the cleaner what access needs to be considered before making changes solely for the appointment. Do not remove a support or pull growth away from a building on the assumption that any resulting access will automatically be suitable.
If you want the plants left undisturbed, state that clearly. The proposed cleaning scope can then be considered with that restriction in mind. Some surfaces may remain partially concealed or need a separate conversation. It is better to agree that position than to expect full coverage while also leaving every obstruction unchanged without discussing the practical effect.
Map the route and the surfaces
A simple ground-level photograph or sketch can show where a fixed trellis sits in relation to the wall. Include the route through the gate or passage if it is narrow. Avoid sending only a close-up of the leaves, which may not show the building component you want cleaned. There is no need to reach through planting or climb to expose a hidden section for the camera.
- Identify the window, fascia, soffit or other agreed surface.
- State whether the plant or support can be moved, or must remain untouched.
- Explain who is responsible for any separate gardening work.
- Show the normal approach and any fixed restriction.
- Mention visible damage or an existing repair concern separately.
- Ask which areas can be included under those conditions.
Work through a hypothetical example
Imagine a homeowner who wants the rear fascia cleaned while a trained climber occupies part of the wall below. The trellis is fixed and the homeowner does not want stems untied. Their enquiry can name the fascia, describe the fixed support and ask about the accessible scope. If a gardening adjustment is later agreed, they can update the cleaner once it is complete. The original message should not promise a clear route that does not yet exist.
A second household may only want window glass beside a freestanding plant support. If they can comfortably move that support themselves, the ordinary booking may remain simple. The distinction is the actual obstruction and agreed preparation, not whether the garden is described as large, small or well maintained.
Choose the service by the building component
For roofline surfaces, start with fascia and soffit cleaning. For an ordinary external-glass request, use domestic window cleaning. If the concern is vegetation or debris within a gutter channel, raise that specifically through gutter clearing rather than assuming a visible-surface wash includes it.
Keep the request focused on cleaning rather than making claims about what a plant has done to the building. If damage is suspected, a suitable assessment is a separate question. The cleaner should not be expected to diagnose hidden defects beneath vegetation or make a repair part of an ordinary appearance clean.
The final agreement should tell everyone what stays in place, what preparation has been agreed and which surfaces are included. That small amount of coordination respects the garden and makes the cleaning expectation practical without requiring unnecessary pruning or promising access that has not been established.
